PrEP is medication that greatly reduces the chance of getting HIV. PrEP can be used by people who may be exposed to HIV through sex or injection drug use.

PEP — POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS
IMPORTANT: PEP MUST BE STARTED WITHIN 72 HOURS
PEP is medication that may prevent HIV after a possible exposure.
Possible exposures include:

Sex when there may have been exposure to HIV

A condom breaking or slipping

Sharing needles, syringes, or other injection equipment

Sexual assault

Certain occupational exposures
If you may have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours, seek medical care immediately.
PEP may be available through an emergency department, urgent care, health-care provider, or public-health clinic.
